D.A.R.E.: Drug Abuse Resistance Education

The Frederick County Sheriffs Office D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program began in the fall of 1988, in seven elementary schools in Frederick County, with one Deputy teaching a 17-week Curriculum in the fifth grade classrooms. These lessons, each lasting approximately 45 minutes, ranged in topics from Ways of Saying No, Peer Pressure, Self-Esteem, Media Influence on Youth, Assertiveness, Skits, as well as Role Models being brought in from the high schools, to answer concern the students might have going into the middle schools.

Today, the Frederick County D.A.R.E. curriculum is a 12-week program, addressing the importance of taking the time to make good choices, not only to drug use, but also to friends, who might try to talk them into things that could be wrong or dangerous. The fifth grade students get to role-play various situations with their classmates, and try to pick what might to be best way to respond to these situations.

• 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. for 7 - 12 year-olds
• 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. for 13 - 16 year-olds
• Attending:
  • Shawn Hibbard of the Richmond Revolution
  • Greg Scott, founder of Cover 3 Football and former NFL Defensive Lineman for the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals.
  • Mark Moseley, the only placekicker in the National Football League to win the Most Valuable Player (1982 season), while playing with the Washington Redskins.
  • Xavier Scott who played college football for Hampton University. Xavier Scott is also a mentor and skill development coach with Cover 3 Football.
  • There will be several of the UFL Virginia Destroyers Cheerleaders attending to coach both, the morning and afternoon, sessions of cheerleading.
• Registration will be at Wal-Mart on Rt. 50 on July 6 and 8 from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m., at the Frederick County Sheriff's office, online at www.cover3football.com, or with the printable registration form.
• $10 registration fee (no checks)
• Each registrant will receive a t-shirt and dog tags on July 9
• Registrants do NOT have to be Frederick County residents. Each child must meet the age requirement.
