Department of Public Works
Clean Sweep
Frederick County Clean Sweep partners with the Community Inmate Workforce and the Virginia Department of Transportation, Winchester Office, to perform litter cleanup efforts along county roads. Last year, the CIWF contributed services valued at $55,224, collecting 57 tons of unsightly litter. This is in addition to efforts by VDOT and Adopt-a-Highway volunteers.
Each year, Frederick County participates in Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program. The GAC takes place from March 1 through May 31, involving an estimated 3 million volunteers and attendees. During the 2011 GAC, county efforts accounted for 35,170 pounds of litter collected; over 493,782 pounds of material recycled, including 80,820 pounds of electronics; the planting of 500 trees, and numerous outreach events reaching 1,535 children and adults. For more information about Keep America Beautiful and how to get involved in this year's GAC, visit www.kab.org.
PLANT PRIDE, NOT LITTER! Community volunteers are asked to join the hundreds of Adopt-A-Highway and Adopt-A-Stream volunteers already cleaning up roadways and waterways across the Commonwealth. For those coordinating a one-time effort, supplies (bags, litter grabbers, vests) are available on a loan basis by contacting the Clean Sweep office.
