Public Safety Position Qualifications

Correctional Officer, Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center

Qualifications include:

  • Be at least 21 years of age upon date of employment;
  • Citizen of the United States;
  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Valid driver's license;
  • Drug free and no felony convictions;
  • Successfully pass the established NRADC Physical Agility Test.

Automatic Disqualifiers:

  • Drug use of any kind after age 30 or within the last three years;
  • Drunk Driving or DUI conviction within the last three years;
  • Misdemeanor conviction involving moral misconduct or indecency after age 30 or within the last five years;
  • Any domestic assault or domestic violence conviction;
  • Driver's license suspension or revocation within the last three years.

If presented with a contingent offer of employment after screening and interview, applicants must:

  • Successfully pass a physical examination;
  • Pass a urine drug screen.

NRADC Application

Dispatcher, Public Safety Communications Department

Qualifications include:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Must be 18 years of age with a high school diploma/GED;
  • Must be Drug free and have no felony convictions;
  • Have not used marijuana within the last 24 months.

Pre-Employment Contingencies and Testing Applicants being favorably considered for employment as a Communications Officer after screening and formal interview will be presented with a contingent job offer. Upon an offer of contingent employment the applicant must:

  • Successfully pass a polygraph test;
  • Successfully pass a drug screen and base line hearing test;
  • Pass a background check.

Frederick County is not currently accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff or Firefighter. Please do not submit applications at this time.

Deputy Sheriff, Sheriff's Office

Qualifications include:

  • Applicants must be of good character;
  • Citizen of the United States;
  • At least 21 years of age;
  • High school diploma or GED, college preferred;
  • Valid driver's license;
  • No felony or serious misdemeanor conviction;
  • No Drunk Driving or DUI conviction within the last 36 months;
  • Have not been convicted of domestic assault or an offense of moral turpitude.

Applicants being favorably considered for employment as a Deputy Sheriff will be presented with a contingent job offer. Upon an offer of contingent employment the applicant must:

  • Successfully complete background investigation;
  • Pass drug screen;
  • Successfully complete psychological testing and polygraph examination;
  • Successfully complete interview process which includes a written examination.

Candidates hired that are not certified will have to successfully complete the Department of Criminal Justice Academy along with the in-house FTO program. Certified candidates must go through the in-house FTO program. All new employees must also successfully complete a minimum 12 month probationary period.

Firefighter/EMT, Fire & Rescue Department

Qualifications include:

  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Proficient in reading and writing;
  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Valid Driver's License;
  • Drug free and no felony convictions;
  • No Drunk Driving or DUI conviction within the last five years;
  • Certified EMT-B and Virginia NFPA Firefighter I or equivalent;

Qualified candidates must:

  • Successfully complete department written and agility examinations;
  • Successfully complete physical and drug screen;
  • Successfully complete background investigation including polygraph. .
