SPECIAL NOTES:
A minimum of three existing houses or lots with right of way accessing the road are required before the GIS Division can accept a request to approve a new road name.
Please submit three road names in order to preference. The petitioner may call the GIS Division ahead of time and check a road name against the official listing. If the proposed name does not conflict with a name currently in use, it can be approved by staff and reserved for future use as an official Frederick County road name.
A street name sign must be erected according to County standards. The developer or responsible agent for subdividing the lots and creating the new roadway is responsible for payment of the street name sign. Please contact Frederick County Public Works Department at (540)665-5643 for production of street signs and any information about the process.
Staff shall have administrative authority to approve new road names. Staff shall check the requested name against the current Frederick County Road Name list for conflicts and adhere to the following restrictions:
No road name shall be abbreviated and must be spelled out completely.
No directional names such as north, south, east, and west shall be accepted.
No road names will be accepted with punctuation.
No road name will be accepted with the first word of the name being the same as another road name in use.
No road name shall be accepted that is spelled the same or phonetically the same as another road name is use.
Road names shall change at major four-way intersections and/or disjointed segments.
After the name is chosen, any structure numbers already assigned from the main road will be reassigned using the new street name and its individual numbering system.
