Road Name Suffix Nomenclature
Road names will not be accepted into the Frederick County Road Naming System without the correct road name suffix.
Any primary road or roads that provide the highest traffic and most direct routes between towns and cities shall be designated as a "Pike."
Any secondary road or feeder roads that provide a state maintained through country access between Pikes shall be referred to as a "Road."
All other road names shall include one of the following suffixes:
ALY Alley - a narrow road between or behind city buildings
AVE Avenue - a wide public suburban road that is heavily-traveled or tree lined
BLVD Boulevard - a broad road divided by an island, tree lined, or landscaped
BYP Bypass - a four lane road circling a city
CIR Circle - a suburban road that circles back upon itself or curves into a dead end
CT Court - a single short suburban cul de sac or dead end road
DR Drive - a major suburban road with connector roads or a rural dead end road
GR Grade - a rural road with a degree of increasing slope, importance, or use
HWY Highway - a primary state road connecting towns or cities
INT Interstate - a primary road exiting between or connecting two or more states
LN Lane - a rural dead end road with no other connecting roads
LOOP Loop - a road that circles back upon itself
OLOOK Overlook - a rural road that has an elevated scenic view
PIKE Pike - a secondary state route between two or more cities
PKWY Parkway - a broad landscaped road
PL Place- a public square, a suburban cul de sac
PLZ Plaza - a commercial, multiple-building parking lot access
RD Road - state numbered cross country through route connecting two other routes
SQ Square - a open area at the intersection of two or more roads, a parking lot
ST Street - a suburban through road
TER Terrace - an open cul de sac/parking lot around a landscaped island
TRL Trail - a rural road primarily in a recreational community
TPKE Turnpike - a wide and modern rural road traversing large sections of land
WAY Way - a through road that connects two separate roads
