Recap!

Thanks to all who attended our 2009 GIS & E-Government Day and many thanks to the speakers who shared ideas and information with attendees. Videos of the presentations will be available via this website soon, but check out the photo gallery below in the meantime.

What is GIS?

More than one million people across the globe rely on geographic information system (GIS) technology to solve problems and make better decisions by thinking and planning geographically. GIS combines computer hardware, software, and data to collect, manage, and analyze geographic information.

With GIS, users can view relationships, processes, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. From mapping wildfires to finding the best location for your favorite coffee shop, GIS helps people see how the world works and changes.

What is GIS Day/E-Government Day?

Since 2005, Frederick County has celebrated GIS Day as a means to share GIS technology with the public. Through map galleries, hands-on activities, and guest speakers, GIS Day has helped people throughout the region understand how GIS technology is used to make decisions in our community. GIS Day has been celebrated globally since 1999, with more than 10,000 organizations hosting events such as open houses, hands-on workshops, and mapping projects. GIS Day success is due to the hard work and dedication of GIS users around the world who see the importance of sharing their GIS knowledge with others.

E-Government Day is held to demonstrate the opportunities and services offered on the Frederick County website. County staff will be available to demonstrate E-services and to provide assistance or answer any questions regarding E-services and the website.

Please join Frederick County as we celebrate our fifth annual GIS Day and our second annual E-Government Day. This year's event features a map gallery with scheduled presentations throughout the day. This event is free and open to the public.
