There are approximately 1.25 million burn injuries each year. 51,000 Americans
are hospitalized and receive burn treatment annually. Burns can be caused by
fire, boiling water, chemicals, electricity and household objects. Burn severity
includes six factors: depth, size, location, age, health and injury source.
Fortunately, the incidence of burn injuries has declined significantly in the
last twenty years.
There are three types of burn-related scars which consist of Keloid,
Hypertrophic and Contractures. Keloid scars are based on the enlargement of scar
tissue. Hypertrophic scars do not develop beyond the site of injury. Lastly, a
Contracture scar is a permanent tightening of skin that could affect muscles and
tendons that lead to limitations to mobility and possible nerve damage.
