Minimum qualifications for employment with Frederick County Fire and Rescue:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
Valid driver's license with good driving record
Successful completion of criminal background check - Completed by Frederick County
We require applicants to have minimum certifications of:
Virginia Department of Fire Programs or ProBoard Certified Firefighter Level I
Virginia or National Registry Certified Emergency Medical Technician (or ALS certification)
Virginia Dept.of Emeregncy Management Certified Hazardous Materials : Operations Level
Virginia Dept.of Fire Programs or VAVRS Emergency Vehicle Operators Certificiation

1. Once an announcement has been made, individuals 18 years of
age or older, interested in taking the written entrance examination must
register with the Human Resources Department of Frederick County via registering
online by the required date. You will take a generalized entrance examination,
designed to evaluate general knowledge. Only candidates with the minimum passing
score will be permitted to the next stage of hiring.
NOTE: A non-refundable $5 testing
fee has been added to testing process.
2. Candidates will undergo a physical agility test,
where they will perform 7 different tasks. There is no practice of the test prior to the administration of the test.
Students will only be able to view the test site and ask questions prior to taking the agility test. The test must be
completed within a 12 minute, 30 second time limit. Anyone who does not complete the test within the required time frame shall not be permitted to continue in the hiring process.

3. Candidates who pass both written and physical agility testing
will be required to submit a county application, and undergo a panel interview.
The panel will ask general department-related questions and evaluate the
candidate on their answers. Candidates who receive the highest evaluations will
continue in the hiring process.
4. Candidates will undergo a physical examination, at no cost to
them, at a local physician's office. The examination includes blood studies,
X-ray and preventative checks, and a cardiac stress test. Also, the candidate
will have a thorough background check to ensure no criminal history.
5. Once the candidate has been cleared by Human Resources and is hired, the personnel will be assigned to a probationary period of six months. During this time they will be trained on departmental procedures and policies. They will be assigned to a county station during this time and
assist with incident response and station duties.
