Preparing for Disaster

* Virginia Tornado Drill - Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 9:45a.m. *

Is your personal kit ready for the winter months?  Do you have a kit in your vehicle as well as one in the home?  If you are unsure of what to include in the kit, you can either visit the ReadyVirginia.gov site or contact the Frederick County office of Emergency Management.

REMEMBER:

  • Make a kit.
  • Have a plan.
  • Stay informed. Listen to weather-alert radios, television news, and internet updates.
  • Secure items outside.
  • Know the road conditions before you leave. Dial 511 for up-to-date traffic and road information.
  • Stay away from downed power lines.

2012 Hurricane Season Starts June 1st

Hurricanes are severe tropical storms that form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Scientists can now predict hurricanes, but people who live in coastal communities should plan what they will do if they are told to evacuate.

Hurricane Watch: a hurricane is possible in your area. Be prepared to evacuate. Monitor weather-alerting radios and local radio and television news outlets for information.

Hurricane Warning: a hurricane is expected in your area. If local authorities advise you to evacuate, leave immediately.
